"ALL ABOUT THAT BASS" or "NO, IT WASN'T A FLYING FISH...FOR LONG": Ah, nature's splendor. It happened last week; you're only hearing about it now because it took us the weekend to mentally process it. A group of fifth-graders enjoyed recess on Friday while an eagle soared majestically overhead. But they found their respite temporarily (and who knows, maybe permanently) interrupted by this decent-sized smallmouth bass plummeting from the sky. Playground detectives pieced together a scenario in which the eagle had plucked the fish from a nearby waterway but lost its grip over the school, sending it hurtling to the ground to the mixed shock and amusement of onlookers young and old. (Because let's face it: This doesn't happen every day at BES. But it probably isn't the first time ever, either.) Photo credit goes to Mrs. Longstreth, who managed to hold it in one hand and shoot it with the other.

HOCO MOJO: We'll celebrate Homecoming Sept. 26, but if you want to dress the part, head over to the apparel shop today to score your HOCO '25 tees and hoodies. You can visit the online store at www.bhshoco25.spiritsale.com or in-person at Create It in downtown Beaverton. Students are also selling the merch during lunch this week. The order cut-off date is Sept. 17 and fans can either pick up their orders at Create It or have them delivered to the school. #GoBeavers

ICONIC: Our hearts are heavy today with the news that over the weekend, we lost one of our very best. Richard Van Wieren, longtime educator, administrator and football coach at Beaverton Schools, retired more than three decades ago, but his imprint on our kids, our school and our community carries so much impact that even today, generations later, an acute sadness hung in the air as word of Coach Van’s passing spread across campus. For those of us who knew him - and there are so, so many - there’s an endless string of adjectives to describe what he meant to our school: Caring, tough, friendly, fair, kind…the list goes on and on. But there’s one word that beats them all: Respected. Coach Van earned respect from so many people he encountered in his days in Beaverton that it seems impossible to find somebody who didn’t hold him in the highest regard as a coach, teacher and friend. It’s rare when the myth matches the man, but Coach Van was that guy, in every sense of the expression. Our thoughts are with his wife Donna and their extended family - which today feels like everybody in the community - at this challenging time. His reach was long, his influence was profound, and his shadow looms large. He was truly one-of-one, a great man. And he will not be forgotten. Rest easy, Coach; we'll meet you in the end zone. #BeavertonAlways

ZERO SIGHTING: We know there are BES parents who want to help out around the school or with the PTO, but they might not know where to go or whom to ask. Wonder no more. Here's a link to the Google doc we have created for would-be volunteers to receive important information: https://tinyurl.com/y6rxpbf3. Sign up and spread the word! When you're in our building, you never know when you might bump into somebody famous like Zero the Hero and his unnamed sidekick, as our BES kids did today on the tenth day of school.

We’re more than halfway through our Beaverton Elementary Fun Run fundraiser! If you haven’t signed up, there’s still time. Plus when you register at MyBooster.com, your student receives a FREE prize! Join the fun today.
