ZERO SIGHTING: We know there are BES parents who want to help out around the school or with the PTO, but they might not know where to go or whom to ask. Wonder no more. Here's a link to the Google doc we have created for would-be volunteers to receive important information: https://tinyurl.com/y6rxpbf3. Sign up and spread the word! When you're in our building, you never know when you might bump into somebody famous like Zero the Hero and his unnamed sidekick, as our BES kids did today on the tenth day of school.

AN INVITATION: The Beaverton Schools Board of Education will meet for a special workshop dedicated to the district's new Strategic Plan. At the meeting on Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. at the BJSHS Media Center, the board will discuss timelines and implementation processes for the various aspects of the plan, which was adopted in June. The meeting is open to the public and community stakeholders are invited to attend the workshop. The plan can be viewed at beavertonschools.net/strategic-plan.

A CRITICAL 30 SECONDS: Every year, we are required to issue a survey to families to collect information that ensures Beaverton receives its full allocation of state and federal funding. Without this information, we could lose essential funding for education programs our students need, including free breakfasts and lunches for all students; instructional staff (reading interventionists, math tutors, academic and behavior aids, etc.); technology and teaching supplies and materials; counselors and social workers; and much more. PLEASE HELP make sure Beaverton Schools gets its full funding by filling out this 30-second survey at bit.ly/3JaOPDS or by scanning the code. It's quick, it's easy, it's crucial to serving students and per board policy, your data is held in the strictest confidence. Regardless of your family's income level, EVERY RESPONSE MATTERS. #GoBeavers

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: The Beaverton Schools Board of Education is seeking a candidate to replace Vice-President Jason Pahl, who resigned August 12.

Interested individuals must be at least 18 years old; a resident of and a registered voter in the Beaverton school district; and willing to finish a term that runs through the end of 2026. Those candidates should submit a letter of interest by 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 to Superintendent Michael Hugan at mhugan@beavertonschools.net or 468 S. Ross St., Beaverton, MI, 48612. Applicants will be given five minutes each to explain their desire to serve at the board’s meeting on Sept. 8. The board will then deliberate and appoint its newest member at that same meeting.

Pahl joined the board in 2021 as an appointee to fill a vacancy and was elected to return in 2022. He also serves as vice-president on the Clare-Gladwin Regional Education Service District Board of Education; he will continue in that capacity. Zdrojewski said the board appreciates his service in both roles.

“Jason answered the bell when we really needed him in 2021,” Zdrojewski said. “We’re all grateful for the time and talent he has given to Beaverton Schools, and we wish him well going forward.”

A GREAT IDEA, PERIOD. We can't say for sure, but it's a pretty safe bet that no other district around here has a wall-sized interactive periodic table, complete with samples of each element. (Minus the radioactive ones, of course.) When the Midland Center for the Arts was repurposing some of the cool exhibits we've all seen there over the years, BJSHS Science Teacher and Element Obsessive Erica Sprague snatched it up on the cheap. Community members then rallied to fund the cost of installation, and here we go. Sixth-graders got an early look at it Monday during orientation, and the rest of the student body and parents can check it out during the K-12 Open House Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. And yes, it's hands-on. #GoBeavers #ItsElementary

CROCKETT IS CLOSED: Parents and students visiting BJSHS today for sixth-grade orientation, practices or anything else, please be advised that Crockett Road is under construction and all visitors should use the M-18 entrance near the Central Office. Also, please be advised that phones in the district are currently down.

ONE LAST REMINDER: School starts for students Mon., Aug. 18 with a half-day, but there’s plenty going on around here before that fateful day, including:

  • Sixth-grade orientation, set for Mon., Aug. 11 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Seventh-grade mentors will be on hand to help sixth-graders get acclimated to the new building and faces. Lunch will be provided. A special open-house for parents will be held at noon in the media center; parents may then stick around to pick up their kids.

  • Additionally, the K-12 Open House will be held at both buildings Wed., Aug. 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., giving all students the opportunity to pick up schedules, figure out the lay of the land and meet their teachers.

  • For parents wondering what supplies their students may need, see the lists below from BES and grades 6-8. The most important item for high school students will be their school-issued Chromebook, which they will receive at the open house or on the first day of school.

  • As always, any donations of tissues, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, paper towels and adhesive bandages will be gratefully accepted for all grades.

  • #GoBeavers
