THE DREAM ENDURES: As we consider the impact and importance of the civil rights icon on Martin Luther King Day, go to www.beavertonschools.net/mlk to find resources you can share with kids to help them understand Dr. King's legacy. #DreamOfPeace #GoBeavers

THANK YOU, SCHOOL BOARD: It's School Board Recognition Month and we've got some nice things to say about these folks. Read all about it here: https://bit.ly/3iCDujc

BOTTLES AND CANS AND JUST CLAP YOUR HANDS: Beaverton students participating in Business Professionals of America need your help. They're fundraising to help defray expenses associated with their competitions and they're running a can drive. You can drop them in Room 155 at BJSHS or arrange pickup by asking a BPA member or calling Jill Wagner at 989.329.8642. Please help spread the word and thanks for supporting this great cause. #BPA #GoBeavers

SMARTY PLANTS: Mr. Hitsman's science students had a special guest today in the form of 2015 Beaverton graduate Tabitha Faber, who's completing her Ph.D. in ethnobotany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Faber spoke to our kids about her focused study of dysphania ambrosioides, also known as epazote or Mexican tea, a plant which has been used as an herb and a medicine, but has also been known to kill people. Through her studies, Faber is working to determine the different varieties of the plant and how they interact with Guatemalan culture. She also discussed her college experiences; the places around the globe those studies have taken her; how plants and cultures interact; what it's like to be a working scientist; and how we have an important relationship with wild plants. It was an impressive, informative visit and a great example of what happens when passion for learning and ambition collide. #BEASuccessStory #GoBeavers

Good afternoon, Beaverton.
Our schools are committed to the safety and education of all of our students and staff. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety procedures and precautions. This afternoon's lockdown training in both buildings was a critical thinking drill with staff & students.
In order to remember training and/or information, it helps if you see it, hear it, AND do it. The students & staff need to perform the drills to understand what they can do. Having this in mind, we need to make sure that all our faculty, staff, and students are prepared when facing a crisis situation.
This was a collaborative effort between Beaverton Schools and the Beaverton City Police Department. We ask that you discuss today's drill with your children and let us know if any follow-up is needed. We understand that it can be disheartening and scary for parents to discuss this topic with their kids, especially the youngest ones.
Thank you for your understanding and please feel free to call either building if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely, Joseph Passalacqua, Superintendent

GOOF ON A ROOF: A mysterious elf bearing a strong resemblance to a BES administrator whose name rhymes with Pawna Martwell was spotted on the roof as kids arrived this morning. Talk about commitment! Meanwhile, her colleagues enjoyed a staff holiday breakfast in the considerably warmer cafeteria while a couple of older boys clearly stepped over the line between naughty and nice. #ChistmasBeavertonStyle #GoBeavers

...AND TO ALL A GOOD BREAK: Beaverton Elementary closed out the year in style this morning, playing host to the BJSHS Band and Choir for a big ol' holiday singalong. Along the way, a handful of students were recognized for bringing the cheer, the crowd was treated to the teaching staff's unique interpretation of 'The 12 Days of Christmas' and, oh yeah, The Big Fella showed up. What a way to end 2022. Check out video of the show at https://youtu.be/rT7DWDmJn6w. #BringOn23 #GoBeavers

CAVALCADE OF CHRISTMAS CUTE: It happens every year: Our Kindergarten and Specials teachers get our little ones dressed up and trained in the art of holiday spirit, they put on a big show and melt our hearts. And they did it again this afternoon. Great job, class of 2035. #Beavers

VISIT TO THE FUTURE: Sophomores paid a visit to Clare-Gladwin CTE classrooms and labs this morning in advance of registration for classes next fall opening this afternoon. (More information is available in the student's Google classroom.) Whether they found themselves driving nails, caring for an artificial infant or plenty of other interactions, it gave students a solid glimpse into the possibilities of the hands-on life of a CTE student. #CTEitsWorking #GoBeavers
