Register your child for our youth basketball league! Boys and girls in grades 4, 5, and 6 are welcome. Volunteer coaching opportunities also available. Games are held on Saturdays starting in January at the different hosting schools. Travel to/from games is the responsibility of parents/guardians. Program runs approximately 6 weeks. A NIGHT AT THE GRIDIRON CINEMA: Treat yourself and your loved ones to a fun movie and good eats while helping the Class of '27 raise funds by joining us for the Movie on the Football Field Saturday, Sept. 20. The tailgate will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the film at 8 p.m. This year's feature at Metzger Field is "Wreck-It Ralph" and there will be dinner, baked goods, soda, popcorn, cornhole and face painting. Entry is free, but the Class of '27 will greatly appreciate donations.

A NEW FACE: The Beaverton Schools Board of Education appointed Samantha Oard to its vacant spot at its meeting Monday night. Oard, who was sworn in immediately and took part in the remainder of the meeting, fills the slot left following the resignation of Jason Pahl last month.
Oard, a 2006 Beaverton graduate, is a Global Human Resources IT Solution Manager at Dow and has two children in the district with her husband, Jim.
“I care deeply about the future of our district and the Beaverton community,” Oard said. “Advocating for our children and their future is a responsibility I take seriously, and I’m honored to serve as a trusted voice. As an Autism mom, I’m especially passionate about supporting students who need extra support and ensuring every child is heard.”
Oard fills a term that will expire at the end of 2026; she’s eligible to run for re-election in November of that year.
“Sam’s a great addition to our team,” noted Board President Adam Zdrojewski. “She’s been very involved in the district in a number of capacities for years, she’s knowledgeable, and we know she’ll do everything she can for the kids in our district.”
Following Oard’s appointment, the board also elected Michael Dodman as its new Vice-President, the role Pahl held before his resignation. The board’s next scheduled meeting is Oct. 13.
THE SMART MONEY'S ALWAYS ON THE GIGGLE GANG: Last Friday's weather-defiant BES Fun Run might have felt like the culmination of the BES fundraiser, but it wasn't, not quite anyway. After families and stakeholders spent the past couple weeks pledging dollars for laps by kids K though 5, the youngsters braved the harsh, rainy wind to fulfill their promises, and they did it with smiles on their faces and pep in their steps. Because of its success at BES, the fundraiser - which will help pay for field trips and guest speakers - has been extended for an additional week, so if you'd like to take part, head over to www.mybooster.com. "ALL ABOUT THAT BASS" or "NO, IT WASN'T A FLYING FISH...FOR LONG": Ah, nature's splendor. It happened last week; you're only hearing about it now because it took us the weekend to mentally process it. A group of fifth-graders enjoyed recess on Friday while an eagle soared majestically overhead. But they found their respite temporarily (and who knows, maybe permanently) interrupted by this decent-sized smallmouth bass plummeting from the sky. Playground detectives pieced together a scenario in which the eagle had plucked the fish from a nearby waterway but lost its grip over the school, sending it hurtling to the ground to the mixed shock and amusement of onlookers young and old. (Because let's face it: This doesn't happen every day at BES. But it probably isn't the first time ever, either.) ICONIC: Our hearts are heavy today with the news that over the weekend, we lost one of our very best. Richard Van Wieren, longtime educator, administrator and football coach at Beaverton Schools, retired more than three decades ago, but his imprint on our kids, our school and our community carries so much impact that even today, generations later, an acute sadness hung in the air as word of Coach Van’s passing spread across campus. For those of us who knew him - and there are so, so many - there’s an endless string of adjectives to describe what he meant to our school: Caring, tough, friendly, fair, kind…the list goes on and on. But there’s one word that beats them all: Respected. Coach Van earned respect from so many people he encountered in his days in Beaverton that it seems impossible to find somebody who didn’t hold him in the highest regard as a coach, teacher and friend. It’s rare when the myth matches the man, but Coach Van was that guy, in every sense of the expression. Our thoughts are with his wife Donna and their extended family - which today feels like everybody in the community - at this challenging time. His reach was long, his influence was profound, and his shadow looms large. He was truly one-of-one, a great man. And he will not be forgotten. Rest easy, Coach; we'll meet you in the end zone. #BeavertonAlways
