On Friday, November 4th, Beaverton Jr/Sr High is providing a mental health and suicide prevention presentation called "Do It For Daniel" for 7th through 12th grade students. Do It For Daniel is the story of deceased Daniel Olson and his battle with depression and anxiety. It is his family's HOPE that Daniel's story will get people talking about depression and anxiety and change the stigma that goes with mental health. The Do It For Daniel documentary took 5 years to complete and has been a labor of love. Since its completion, Coach Jeff Olson (Daniel’s father) has taken the documentary to 80+ schools in the Midwest & facilitated 150 presentations to communities, hospitals, universities & many other organizations in the Olson family’s quest to erase mental health stigma.
Here is a brief information video: https://vimeo.com/228959134
We recognize that this topic may be a trigger for students that have lost loved ones to suicide and/or experience depression and anxiety. Families have the option of opting their student out of the presentation. During the presentation, students that opt out will report to the library where they will be supervised by a counselor and school staff. Morning CTE students that are wishing to attend CTE, as normal, must follow the opt out procedures. The presentation schedule is 8:50-10:50 a.m. on Friday, November 4th. If you prefer your child to not participate in this presentation, please call the school at 989-246-3010 or email: jjohnston@beavertonschools.net by Tuesday, November 1st. Counselors will be available at the conclusion of the presentation to speak with students, as needed.
