Educational Economics
Undoubtedly, many of you probably watched the press conference today, but if you didn’t the high level takeaway is that Gov. Whitmer announced that if your region is in Phase 4 of the MI Safe Start plan, in-person instruction may go forward with strict, with mandatory health and safety protocols which will be defined in the Roadmap for Return to Learn. We expect that roadmap to be released on or around June 30th. The Return to School plan will align closely with the MI Safe Start Plan. The governor will consider the six phases of the MI Safe Start Plan and the Michigan Economic Recover Council’s 8 regions of the state to determine when, where, and how face-to-face instruction can resume. Districts, students, staff, and families must be nimble and be prepared to move backwards if there is evidence of community spread of the virus. The Roadmap will set the minimum health and safety requirements, although districts may choose to enact more aggressive ones in consultation with local public health officials. These minimum requirements will apply to all schools, including traditional public, charter, private, and parochial schools. The governor also acknowledged that her top priority for budget would be to preserve K-12 funding recognizing that the protocols necessary for a safe return to school will require additional expenditures. While this is a welcome sentiment, it’s a monumental task given the shortfalls we face.

Tell Congress to Support Schools – Sign the Petition Michigan's students and schools need our entire Congressional delegation to speak with a single voice in support of schools and students. Districts are facing a projected huge $700 or more per student loss...a loss that would profoundly hurt students and schools. https://p2a.co/P9f2nOG
