DISSECTION AFFECTION: What do owls eat? Students in Mrs. Lyons’ Science classes answered that question in the second-grossest way possible today as they performed dissections of owl pellets. (For the uninitiated: Owl pellets are regurgitated prey, producing whole or partial skulls, skeletons, fur and feathers of rodents, insects, lizards, rabbits, bats, snakes and birds.) The initial disgusted reactions to the premise eventually gave way to the undeniable coolness of science, and by the end of the session, the young faces had shifted from horror to curiosity. #GoBeavers #GoScience

"WHY ASK PI?" or "JUST A SPLATTER OF TIME": We can't exit this week without paying tribute to the highly-regarded and now-annual Pi Assembly, held every March 14. Spirited sessions of duck-duck-goose and musical chairs eventually gave way to the main event: the BPA fundraiser in which students paid for a chance to put a pie square in the face of any number of staff luminaries. And boy, did they keep that promise. #WhoWantsPi

SOFTBALL CLINIC: The BJSHS Softball team will host a Pitching & Catching Clinic Sunday, March 17 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the BES gym. The cost is $10 per athlete and the clinic is open to students in the fourth grade and up. Pay at the door and checks can be made to Beaverton Softball. (This event is rescheduled from its original date of March 10.)

**Reminder** All high school spring sports start Monday, March 11th. Students participating will need a physical on file in the office.

Last weekend, these three student athletes participated in State tournaments! Kaelyn Fischer finished 32nd out of all qualifiers in the State Singles Bowling tournament. Leland Love and Eli Roe had great showings at the State Individual Wrestling tournament, with Eli placing 6th overall in the Division 3, 150 lb. weight class. Great Job Beavers!

GETTING CAUGHT TRYING: Specials teachers at BES have dialed up the importance of student kindness this school year and it's showing. Staff are keeping their eyes peeled to catch students committing unsolicited acts of kindness like saying "please" and "thank you," cleaning up more than their share, lifting others through nice comments and generally serving as a force for positivity. At the end of each month, a set of students are being recognized, and here's this month's batch. MATTERS LOCAL AND COSMIC: Interesting times at BJSHS this morning. Students (led by the BHS Marching Band) gathered in the hall to well-wish state finalists Kaelyn Fischer (bowling) and Eli Roe and Leland Love (wrestling). Meanwhile in P.E. class, they broke out the black lights and partook in Beaverton's first-ever session of Cosmic Badminton. #TotallyRadical

Friday night was truly historic, witnessing the incredible retirement of our legendary boys basketball coach after 50 years! What a night for Beaverton! Not only did we celebrate the incredible 50-year coaching career of Coach Roy F. Johnston, but both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams brought home Butch and the Cedar River Cup with thrilling Friday night wins! Special thank you's go out to Will Gaudard & the athletic department, the coaches & student-athletes, the maintenance, kitchen, & custodial staff, the Hall of Fame committee along with Scott Govitz, the student council, the sports boosters, the Beaverton staff & administration working with the many other entities that contributed to a beautiful evening at the Roy F. Johnston gymnasium. Together, you created an unforgettable night that will be etched in our memories forever. We witnessed history, celebrated a legend, and shared a truly special moment as a community. NEW LEARNERS: Beaverton Elementary Schools is accepting applications for enrollment for the 2024-25 school year and will host a New Learners Info Night Feb. 28 to introduce families to the school. “Because we offer more than kindergarten for young learners at Beaverton, we wanted to open the process up to students who may be better suited for our preschool or our Young Fives program,” said BES Principal Shawna Hartwell. “That’s why we’re expanding the traditional Kindergarten Roundup event to include those younger ages as well.” The New Learners Info Night, set for 6 p.m. on Feb. 28 at BES, will offer families a chance to hear about the different programs, meet with staff and tour the facilities. Hartwell said Beaverton’s growing preschool program is one reason behind the event, but not the only one. “Next fall, in addition to our three kindergarten classes and our preschool and Young Fives classes, we plan to offer an additional preschool opportunity,” she said. “Working with families earlier in the process will help ensure that each student is placed in the best position to succeed as they begin their careers here at Beaverton Schools.” Hartwell said families are welcome to enroll at the district anytime by visiting beavertonschools.net/enroll or calling 246-3020. “This event is a great way for young students and their families to get to know the staff and the school,” she said. “Once they’re enrolled, we’ll follow up with student assessments to determine the appropriate starting point for them in our school. It’s all designed to provide the best learning environment possible for new students at this crucial juncture of their development.”

REMINDER: Our excellent Parent Involvement Night series continues Wednesday at 5 p.m. at BES with guest speaker Sarah McCurdy from the Clare-Gladwin Great Start Collaborative. Her topics will include "How to Help Your Child Handle Emotions" and "Communication Between Children and Parents." Free childcare and free pizza will also be available and one family will win tickets to a BJSHS athletic event. All families are welcome to join us.
