Beaverton Schools, along with other school districts in Clare and Gladwin Counties, are currently operating without internet service and with intermittent phone service due to a technical failure. Our Information Technology partners at Clare-Gladwin RESD are working to resolve the problem, but at this time, it is unknown when services will be restored. For this reason, the PSAT ninth-grade testing scheduled for tomorrow has been rescheduled for Monday, April 22. Parents should be advised that district telephones, along with internet and email, may still be affected tomorrow and plan accordingly. Thank you for your patience; we hope to be back to full strength tomorrow.

BUILD CHAMPS: The mission: Take some tools, a stack of lumber and three-and-a-half hours and build a five-foot-by-five-foot deer blind. And build it better than everybody else. That's what four young men from Beaverton did today, capturing first place in the annual MCTA Deer Blind Competition at their CTE Construction Trades lab in Clare. Juniors Lincoln Stoike, Talan Jensen and Landin Woods and senior Reese Longstreth out-sawed, out-drilled and out-assembled students from Lapeer, Muskegon and beyond to win the competition, displaying exemplary skill and teamwork in the process. In winning, they also brought home an excellent cache of construction tools for their efforts. Well done, gents. Congrats and #GoBeavers.

DID YOUR PRINCIPAL EVER DO THIS? If you ever wondered how far a principal would go to get kids fired up about state testing, we may have found the answer this afternoon. Not only did BES leader Shawna Hartwell dress up as Wonder Woman for the superhero-themed assembly, but the bleachers shook with fury as select representatives from each class were chosen to...SLIME THE PRINCIPAL! It was an uproariously good time and a great way to bring winning energy to next week's testing. Here's hoping for a repeat of last year, when Beaverton students in grades 3 through 6 outperformed their counterparts in neighboring districts by an average of more than 10 percent. RIGHTY, TIGHTY: Sixth-grade STEM students have spent the whole week tearing stuff apart and putting it back together, and it's been just as fun as it sounds. LOOK SMART: Monday’s total solar eclipse promises a rare and special opportunity for learning, and we want to make sure everyone does it safely. STATEMENT FROM THE BEAVERTON SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION - March 20, 2024 - At its meeting Wednesday night, the Beaverton Schools Board of Education announced it had reached an agreement with Superintendent Joseph Passalacqua to part ways, effective March 31. At the same meeting, the board appointed Tom House as the district’s interim superintendent beginning April 1. House, a longtime educator in the area, was superintendent at Harrison Community Schools from 2008 until 2015 following a distinguished career as a teacher and principal in that district. Since then, he’s presided in interim leadership roles at Farwell Area Schools and the Career & Technical Education department at Clare-Gladwin RESD. House’s responsibilities in Beaverton will include overseeing day-to-day district operations and assisting the board as it conducts a thorough search for the district’s next superintendent. The board wishes to assure community stakeholders, staff and students that its focus remains squarely on continuing to provide the best possible learning environment for students while maintaining its fiduciary responsibilities to the community. The board has no further comment at this time.

DISSECTION AFFECTION: What do owls eat? Students in Mrs. Lyons’ Science classes answered that question in the second-grossest way possible today as they performed dissections of owl pellets. (For the uninitiated: Owl pellets are regurgitated prey, producing whole or partial skulls, skeletons, fur and feathers of rodents, insects, lizards, rabbits, bats, snakes and birds.) The initial disgusted reactions to the premise eventually gave way to the undeniable coolness of science, and by the end of the session, the young faces had shifted from horror to curiosity. #GoBeavers #GoScience
