(FYI--January 22,2021 is the end of the first semester)

As citizens who serve children and represent their communities, individual school board members face complex and demanding challenges. Yet, few people fully understand the scope
and far-reaching implications of board members’ responsibilities.
All Michiganders should recognize the vital contributions of these men and women and focus attention on the crucial role these elected public officials play in the education of our children.
#GoBeavers

Wanted to take a moment to thank a Beaverton legend, Mr. Bob Frei.
Bob has served approximately 14 years on the Beaverton Board of Education. Last night was Mr. Frei's last Board meeting as a school board member.
However, Mr. Frei continues to be an active member of the community.
Please join me in thanking Bob Frei for his service to Beaverton Schools.

Michigan’s best prep volleyball teams will be crowned when the playoffs resume after the current coronavirus-induced pause in high school sports. We anxiously await the decision from MHSAA & MDHHS.
However, the state’s top players were recognized Monday, when the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association announced its all-state teams for Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Congratulations to the following young ladies from Beaverton:
Division 3
1st Team All State--Molly Gerow
2nd Team All State--Mady Pahl

Good afternoon Beaverton,
We have another COVID positive case with more contact tracing situations that will cause us to close school for face to face learning until Monday, November 30, 2020.
We will begin virtual learning on Monday, November 16, 2020.
We are hoping that this forced isolation will allow us a return to face to face learning on Monday, November 30.
We beg everyone to stay safe & healthy through the Thanksgiving holiday.
Please be reminded of our food pick up on Mondays from 1:30 to 2:30pm and from 4:00 to 5:30pm behind the Junior Senior High School.

Here is the link for this week's Beaverton Schools' Superintendent Report from Mr. Passalacqua.
Please stay safe to our hunters and hopes of everyone remaining healthy.
https://5il.co/n1wt

Good evening Beaverton,
I am writing today to notify you that we have had a couple more situations that will cause us to close school for face to face learning
on Monday and Tuesday, November 16 & 17.
Monday & Tuesday will be virtual learning via Zoom, Google meet, etc.
Also, the district buildings and offices will be closed for Friday, November 13.
We are still holding out hope for a return to face to face learning on Wednesday, November 18. However, we cannot have our numbers rise anymore.
We beg everyone to stay safe & healthy.

Good evening Beaverton,
Our scheduled half-days on Thursday & Friday will now change to a full district closure. We were informed of two more positive COVID 19 cases in the Elementary. Our cleaning crew has been notified and decontaminating the area. Closing the buildings will allow us to contact trace before any return to school on Monday, November 16th.
Staff is asked to report as scheduled.
Parent Teacher conferences will be conducted virtually on Thursday, November 12, 2020 from 1-4pm and 5-8pm. The teachers will be meeting online with families individually. This will allow us to keep our distance but have private conversations. Please be patient and understanding as we attempt something a bit different from the norm.
Volleyball team will still travel to Manton for the Regional Final.
#GoBeavers

Good afternoon Beaverton,
We understand that the school closure has many individuals concerned and wondering what is happening. Throughout the day, we have been notified of two additional situations that caused us to contact trace more individuals due to exposure to a positive COVID 19 case.
We have been in contact with our local health department as it pertains to our situation.
After thorough investigation, we have chosen to reopen the schools for Face to Face instruction on Tuesday, November 10, 2020; except for the following classes:
Young 5's classroom will be virtual
Kindergarten--Mrs. Revis' classroom is virtual
2nd Grade--Mrs. Smith & Mrs. Born classes are virtual
All of 7th Grade classes will be offered virtually
All classes that are listed as virtual learning are asked to NOT REPORT to school. These classes will have further communication coming from the building principal. If your class is not listed as virtual, then your class will be resuming as normal tomorrow.
We understand that this may be an inconvenience for some folks, but we want to continue offering our quality educational programs in a face to face environment as much as possible.
Thanks again for your understanding and cooperation.

This afternoon, a Beaverton employee notified us of their positive COVID-19 diagnosis; along with the news that a Beaverton parent tested positive as well and their children were in school.
This will cause numerous staff and students to be quarantined for a period of time that is still unknown. We plan to decontaminate the buildings and continue our contact tracing throughout Monday. The schools and/or the Health Department will be notifying which students and staff need to be quarantined.
With that being said, Beaverton Schools will be closed on Monday, November 9, 2020.
Once again, we plead with the community to keep your children home when they are not feeling well. Parents/guardians are reminded to screen your children daily before sending them to school.
We will have more information coming out on Monday with another announcement. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
Staff are expected to report unless you are notified to quarantine.

MDHHS Director Issues Epidemic Public Health Order
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Director Robert Gordon today issued an Emergency Order under MCL 333.2253 restricting gathering sizes, requiring face coverings in public spaces, and places limitations on bars and other venues. Under MCL 333.2253, if the MDHHS director determines that control of an epidemic is necessary to protect the public health, the director by emergency order may prohibit the gathering of people for any purpose and may establish procedures to be followed during the epidemic to insure continuation of essential public health services and enforcement of health laws.
Today’s orders largely reinstate, under the department’s authority, three major aspects of prior emergency orders issued by Gov. Whitmer:
Requirements to wear masks at indoor and outdoor gatherings: The order requires individuals to wear masks when in gatherings, defined as any occurrence where persons from multiple households are present in a shared space in a group of two or more and requires businesses and government offices to enforce those requirements for gatherings on their premises.
The order also requires the wearing of masks at schools for all grades, except for in Michigan Economic Recovery Council Region 6.
Limitations on the size of gatherings: The order reinstates limitations on gathering sizes that mirror the requirements that Governor Whitmer had previously put in place. These include indoor gatherings of more than 10 and up to 500 people occurring at a non-residential venue are permitted within the following limits:
In venues with fixed seating, limit attendance to 20% of normal capacity. However, gatherings up to 25% of normal capacity are permitted in Michigan Economic Recovery Council Region 6.
In venues without fixed seating, limit attendance to 20 persons per 1,000 square feet in each occupied room. However, gatherings of up to 25 persons per 1,000 square feet are permitted in Michigan Economic Recovery Council Region 6.
Non-residential outdoor gatherings of between 100 and 1,000 persons at venues with fixed seating are permitted at up to 30% of normal capacity and at 30 persons per 1,000 square feet at venues without fixed seating.
Limitations on certain establishments: Although the order does not close bars, it requires them to close indoor common areas where people can congregate, dance, or otherwise mingle. Indoor gatherings are prohibited anywhere alcoholic beverages are sold except for table services where parties are separated from one another by at least six feet.
In addition, athletes training or practicing for or competing in an organized sport must wear a facial covering, except when swimming, or consistently maintain six feet of social distance.
The order is effective immediately and valid through October 30, 2020.

Good morning Beaverton,
As of October 5, 2020, we will not require any changes to our current practices that were in place as of last week.
We will continue to cohort our groups in the kindergarten through 5th grade. Those students will not be required to wear a mask in their classrooms. However, once they travel to common areas, our their specials' classes, then they will be asked to mask up.
Please be patient as more changes may be coming. Thank you for your understanding.

To all Parents/Guardians,
Lockdown training
This message is to inform you about a safety lockdown that we had this afternoon. Our schools are committed to the safety and education of all our students. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise.
Today’s lockdown was just a drill.
Lockdown procedures were followed and the police were involved.
This was a collaborative effort between the schools, the Beaverton City Police Department and Gladwin County Police Department.
Sometimes, secure mode and/or lockdown situations can frighten students. Please discuss this situation with your children and let us know if follow-up is needed at school.
Thank you for your understanding.
Please feel free to call either building if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you.

We had a great evening last night at our supply drive. Thank you to all who donated! Also, a special thank you to Kelly Armbruster & Thrivent for making this all happen. Thank you to all of the workers who came to lend a hand too and Mr. Z for supplying the tasty pulled pork.
The parade was awesome! Their is a video posted on our FB page of the parade.
We were blessed with a guest appearance from Miss Beaverton.
Lastly, the Beavers were victorious over the G's last night. It was a great evening.
A sincere thank you to all who came out and donated or assisted in any way.

Please be reminded of our Supply Drive tomorrow evening.
Please help spread the word.
Each donation entitles that person to a free meal.
Due to the Executive Orders, we have restrictions on spectators for the Volleyball event. Each participant is only allowed 2 spectators and the events are not open to the general public. Sorry for any inconvenience.
However, we are still able to have the drop off site for supplies right under the Circus tent by the parking lot of the athletic complex.

As part of the MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap, Beaverton Schools has developed a committee of stakeholders to assist in the development and revision of our Return To Learn Plan. This committee will be discussing the critical components that will be necessary to ensure success of learning within our district while ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff.
We want everyone to be aware that we will have an option for our families if they choose a distance learning option. We have partnered with Founders Academy to offer a distance learning option for our families. More information to follow.
We look forward to hearing from you.

We have some changes to our Class of 2020 Commencement ceremony.
Our commencement plans are impacted by the different phases of the governor's reopening plan. Gladwin County is part of Region 4 and our region is currently listed in Phase 4 of the reopening plan.
We plead with everyone to please be understanding. We waited as long as possible before finalizing these decisions.

To the Beaverton community,
Late Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer released the MI Safe Schools Return to Schools Roadmap, a 63 page document with comprehensive guidance to help local school districts create plans for in-person learning this fall. Additionally, Governor Whitmer announced the signing of Executive Order 2020-142 which provides guidance on developing “Preparedness Plans”.
The MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap offers guidelines as to the types of safety protocols that will be required or recommended at each phase. The safety protocols detailed in the Roadmap includes guidance on the use of personal protection equipment (PPE), good hygiene, cleaning/disinfecting, spacing in classrooms, screening for symptoms, athletics, and more. The Roadmap also recognizes the impact COVID-19 has
had on students’ and educators’ mental health and offers guidance on how schools can address this issue.
At the same time, Dr. Michael Rice, Michigan State Superintendent said, “Congress needs to approve additional federal aid so that children’s education is not harmed in a pandemic. This additional federal aid needs to include not simply funding to make up for lost state aid in the pandemic, but also funding to address personal
protection equipment and catch-up learning in the pandemic.”
Obviously, there’s a lot of information in the roadmap. The administrative team met yesterday morning to begin working on our three different plans. Also, the local superintendents met yesterday to continue dialogue around the implementation of these plans for all districts within this region. All districts are faced with a difficult challenge, yet we are navigating unchartered waters.
At this time, we do not have all of the answers, but we are working tirelessly to finalize our plans for the return in the Fall.
Respectfully,
Joseph Passalacqua

Undoubtedly, many of you probably watched the press conference today, but if you didn’t the high level takeaway is that Gov. Whitmer announced that if your region is in Phase 4 of the MI Safe Start plan, in-person instruction may go forward with strict, with mandatory health and safety protocols which will be defined in the Roadmap for Return to Learn. We expect that roadmap to be released on or around June 30th.
The Return to School plan will align closely with the MI Safe Start Plan. The governor will consider the six phases of the MI Safe Start Plan and the Michigan Economic Recover Council’s 8 regions of the state to determine when, where, and how face-to-face instruction can resume. Districts, students, staff, and families must be nimble and be prepared to move backwards if there is evidence of community spread of the virus.
The Roadmap will set the minimum health and safety requirements, although districts may choose to enact more aggressive ones in consultation with local public health officials. These minimum requirements will apply to all schools, including traditional public, charter, private, and parochial schools.
The governor also acknowledged that her top priority for budget would be to preserve K-12 funding recognizing that the protocols necessary for a safe return to school will require additional expenditures. While this is a welcome sentiment, it’s a monumental task given the shortfalls we face.

So much has changed since Gov. Whitmer released her proposed budget for 2020-2021 in February.
There have been so many significant changes over the past months and the reality is, the budget we will adopt this year will be vastly different from the one we had planned to adopt pre-pandemic.
During this meeting, we will address the current landscape of education. All information will be fluid at this point and subject to change after the May 15th Revenue Consensus.
Public comment will be taken in to advisement. Stakeholders that join the meeting may pose questions in the chat for our administration team to take in to consideration as we are adjusting and finalizing next year's budget.

As a result of COVID-19 and the closing of school buildings for the 2019-2020 School Year,
school districts must submit a Continuity of Learning and COVID-19 Response Plan (“Plan”) in
order to continue to receive state aid for operations. Although schools are closed and not
providing in-person instruction, teaching and learning must continue. Michigan educators have
been called to provide our students with continued learning.
The document attached here helps explain a small portion of our learning plan. Also, it indicates where people can find information to help answer any difficult questions that may have come up.
Thank you for your continued patience and support through these difficult times.

MHSAA Cancels Remainder of 2019-20 Winter & Spring Season
EAST LANSING, Mich. – April 3 – The Michigan High School Athletic Association has canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 Winter and Spring sports seasons, in compliance with the Thursday (April 2) “state of disaster” directive by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer closing school buildings and moving education online for the remainder of the school year to help decrease the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
This will be the first school year to not see MHSAA Finals played in multiple sports since 1942-43, when World War II led to the elimination of Finals in most sports.
We are thinking of our student-athletes, parents, coaches and fans.
GO RED!

Good morning Beaverton Community. Please make sure that people are aware of this wonderful opportunity. This also gives everyone a LEGITIMATE reason to get out of the house. We are providing a breakfast and lunch for several days. Folks will have access to at least 4-6 meals FOR EACH.

If you are perplexed, you feel confused and slightly worried by something because you do not understand it. Well, you are NOT alone.
We anxiously await the Governor's executive order tomorrow as it pertains to K-12 schooling.
I can give you my assurance that Beaverton staff is working hard on learning plans for our students with the potential that we will not return to school for the remainder of the year.
We are anticipating that the Governor's announcement tomorrow will provide some answers to the questions that you may have. However, we will still need to adjust on a day to day and week to week basis. These are some unprecedented times. Here are just a few questions:
What will “instruction” look like over the next couple of months?
What will happen with the senior class?
Will there be a graduation? When will it be held?
Will I be promoted to the next grade?
Will districts receive school funding for the remainder of this year?
And the questions go on, and on, and on. Please be patient and plan to be contacted by our staff so that we may try to assist each and every one of our community members.

As communities across the United States prepare for the novel coronavirus, many are wondering how schools plan to respond. Beaverton Schools has been in touch with our local health departments, to get some advice on best practices and next steps as the the outbreak goes on. Sharing out information at this time is what is recommended.

A special thank you to our many varied and great volunteers for organizing a wonderful event in honor of Dar Grove and his new 1,500 mile milestone.
The event was very well planned and Dar was relishing his time walking his final laps to obtain his new level of attainment before a really, really big crowd of onlookers that included a well-represented Beaverton Schools contingent of personnel and students.

Good morning Beaverton Community. This morning, we did have a bus break down during its' run. The bus did not have any students on it when it broke down. We did send a spare bus. All students are safe and sound. However, we did run little late due to the circumstances. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

To all Parents/Guardians,
Lockdown training
This post is to inform you about a lockdown training that we had this morning. Our schools are committed to the safety and education of all our students. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise. Today’s lockdown was just a drill.
Lockdown procedures were followed and the police were involved. This was a collaborative effort between the schools, the Beaverton & Gladwin City Police Department and Gladwin County Police Department.
Sometimes, secure mode and/or lockdown situations can frighten students. Please discuss this situation with your children and let us know if follow-up is needed at school.
Thank you for your understanding.
Please feel free to call either building if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Joseph Passalacqua
Superintendent
